This page explains the basics of the chocobo companion window. It is only accessible once you've received a chocobo from your Grand Company after defeating Ifrit in the main storyline.
Your chocobo companion gains experience for each enemy you defeat with it while it is summoned. When it levels up you get points to put into skill trees which can make it more powerful. You can have your chocobo tank enemies, be a damage dealer, or even be your healer.
The Actions tab allows you to summon, withdraw, or mount your chocobo. It also allows you to choose how your chocobo acts in battle. Favorite feed is also displayed if your chocobo has one. These can all be put on your hotbar for convenience.
The Skills tab shows the three skill trees and which skills your chocobo has learned. Leveling up in a skill tree progressively costs more points. Example: First skill costs 1 point, second costs 2...up to 10 for last skill in each tree.
The Appearance tab shows all the bardings you have collected for your chocobo to use. You can mix and match, or even have your chocobo wear no barding at all.
Tips:
-If your chocobo dies in battle you can instantly resummon it with another Gysahl Green.
-You cannot open the companion window if your chocobo is stabled.
-You cannot mount your chocobo if it is stabled.
-You CAN mount your chocobo if it is summoned into battle but you CANNOT mount any other mounts you have until you withdraw your chocobo companion.
-You can rename your chocobo if you stable it.
-A rank 10 chocobo can maximize one skill tree if you put all the points into a single tree. Depending on which tree you max out you unlock a special barding for it.
-A rank 20 chocobo can maximize all three skill trees and get all three bardings!
-There is a weekly bonus experience gain for your chocobo from the Challenge Log if you defeat 20 and 100 enemies within ten levels of your own character's level.
Gysahl Greens are the item needed to summon your chocobo companion into your party for battle. Each Gysahl Green summons your chocobo for 30 minutes, then you must use another. They are only 36 gil each and can be bought from a NPC in each of the three main cities. (Ul'dah Steps of Nald X:10 Y:9 // Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks X:9 Y:11 // New Gridania X:11 Y:11)
Using a Reagan Pepper resets your chocobo's skill trees. It costs 48,000 Grand Company Seals (minimum Second Lieutenant ranking) or 20 Allied Seals (the much cheaper alternative).
